NOW broadband

NOW broadband is owned by Sky but undercuts their broadband packages while providing the same speeds. This no frills provider is growing in popularity by offering a simple service with the option to add on their TV packages as well as not conducting any credit checks. But are they any good?

NOW has two types of connections available and three different speeds on offer.  Like most of the UK’s internet providers NOW uses BT’s Openreach network and therefore offers similar speeds to more of the competition.

Their introductory plan called “Brilliant Broadband” uses an ADSL connection that comes through a copper wire to your house. This is the cheapest type of connection available currently in the UK but also the slowest, offering download speeds of 11Mbps. Whilst these speeds is on the lower end, they should be sufficient for light usage and using a streaming service. What is important to consider though, is that ADSL connections can vary in quality. The further away your property is from the telephone exchange box, the slower your connection will be.

NOW’s next offering is called “Fab Fibre”, which like its name suggests uses a fibre connection. This deal provides download speeds of 36 Mbps, making it a good choice for young couples with a number of connected devices, or a small family. Most entry level fibre deals start with the same speeds, but at £21 a month, NOW’s offer is one of the cheaper ones on the market.

NOW’s fastest offering is “Super Fibre” using a fibre connection to reach speeds of up to 63 Mbps. This package is ideal for families, or very consistent users who like to game and use a number of streaming services at the same time.

NOW uses a rebranded Sky Q Hub, calling it the NOW Hub 2. This router will be perfectly capable of providing you with the internet you have chosen as it can cope with speeds twice as high as NOW’s premium offering. This means your router should be able to last comfortably through your broadband contract including future upgrades, should you decide to stay with the provider.

As standard, NOW charge £60 as a set-up fee if you do not want to sign onto a contract. If you are happy to commit for 12 months though this fee is always waived. In most cases, if you have an existing landline, switching to NOW will take around 10-14 days to activate your broadband, which is the industry standard. You can expect to receive your new router within this timeframe, along simple instructions on how to set it all up and get plugged in. One thing to keep in mind is, that each property is different, and some existing landlines may still need a technician to visit and set up your broadband, which could slow down the process.

Similarly, if you don’t have an existing landline you will need to arrange an installation with NOW, and an installation fee may be charged. If an installation is required, it will take longer than 14 days but an express installation can also be arranged for an additional fee.

As of October 2021, NOW as a whole company, including their TV division has a 1.5 out of 5 on Trustpilot. Although this may not seem great at first, Trustpilot famously attracts an overwhelmingly negative bias as customers are a lot more likely to leave a negative review than a positive one. Admittedly though this is lower than Origin, TalkTalk, or Plusnet but is the same as their parent companies Sky and BT.

Looking through many reviews it seems customers issues tend to be centred around billing issues and their connections being interrupted. While people who choose to leave a positive reviews tended to enjoy NOW’s prices.

As such, they offer broadband bundles including their Now Entertainment membership at half the cost for a whole year. This gives you access to a number of exclusive tv shows and films, which is a handy and cost-effective add-on for those who tend to stream most of their entertainment.
