How to cancel Sky broadband

Sky broadband and Sky TV can be billed together but run on entirely separate contracts, which catches a lot of people out when they come to cancel. Whether you are switching provider, stopping Sky altogether, or just weighing up a renewal offer, this guide covers the current cancellation process, what it might cost, and what to check before you decide.

What to check before cancelling Sky broadband

Minimum term and contract end date.

Check this in your online account or by calling Sky customer service, since it determines whether an early termination charge applies.

Current monthly price and any promotional period.

A discount that is due to end soon changes the real cost of staying versus leaving.

Which services sit on the same account.

Broadband, TV, phone and mobile can all be billed together but are separate contracts with Sky, each with its own terms.

The effect of changing only one part of a bundle.

Cancelling broadband alone does not automatically cancel Sky TV, and cancelling TV does not cancel broadband. Each has to be actioned separately.

Equipment tied to the service.

Broadband and TV equipment are returned separately and on different timelines, covered below.

How to cancel Sky broadband

If you are switching to another provider

For most switches, you do not need to contact Sky directly. Ofcom's One Touch Switch process means your new provider handles the whole move, contacting Sky on your behalf and arranging the cancellation as part of setting up your new service. This now covers the large majority of UK residential switches, including moves to and from providers that once sat outside it.

If your particular switch cannot be completed through One Touch Switch, your new provider should explain what you need to do instead. See how long a broadband switch takes if timing is a factor in your decision.

This only covers broadband. If you also have Sky TV, you will need to cancel that separately and directly with Sky, since switching broadband provider does not end a Sky TV subscription.

If you are cancelling without a replacement service

If you are stopping Sky broadband altogether rather than moving to a new provider, you will need to contact Sky directly to give notice. Sky's own guidance points to its help pages and web chat as the primary route, since cancellation cannot currently be completed through a self-service online form alone; the exact current contact options should be confirmed on Sky's help pages at the time you cancel, since Sky updates its contact routes from time to time.

If you are moving home

Moving is not the same as cancelling outright, and Sky may be able to transfer your existing service to your new address instead of ending your contract. According to Sky’s own moving-home guidance, you should get in touch around 2-4 weeks’ ahead of your move. See our guide on moving home with broadband for the fuller process.

Will you pay a fee to leave Sky broadband?

It depends on where you are in your contract, and on which product you have:

  • Within your cooling-off window: you should be able to cancel penalty-free. Sky's own guidance offers a longer-than-statutory cooling-off period, currently at 31 days.
  • Within your minimum term: an early termination charge is likely to apply. Sky calculates this based on your specific product and the time remaining on your contract, according to Sky's current early termination charges. The monthly rate varies by product and by when you originally signed up, so there is no single figure that applies to every customer.
  • After your minimum term has ended: no early termination charge applies.

Because the exact charge depends on your specific product and contract start date, check your account or Sky's official early termination charges guidance for the figure that applies to you, rather than relying on a number quoted elsewhere.

What notice period applies?

Notice periods differ by product, so do not assume broadband and TV follow the same rule, according to Sky's current broadband cancellation guidance:

  • Broadband: at least 14 days' notice if you are cancelling without switching.
  • Sky TV (Sky Q and similar): a longer notice period of up to 31 days.

If you are switching broadband provider through One Touch Switch, you generally do not need to separately give Sky notice yourself, since your new provider's request to Sky serves that purpose. Keep a record of when you gave notice, or when your new provider's switch was confirmed, in case there is ever a dispute about your service end date.

Do you need to return Sky equipment?

Generally, yes, if the equipment is on loan rather than owned outright. Sky is responsible for telling you which items need to be returned and how, using its provided return method for that equipment.

Rather than assuming a fixed deadline or process, follow the current Sky return instructions for the specific equipment you're asked to send back, since deadlines and methods can vary by equipment type and are set out directly by Sky at the time. Broadband and TV equipment are handled as separate returns, in line with broadband and TV being separate contracts.

What happens if Sky broadband is part of a bundle?

Cancelling one part of a Sky bundle does not automatically cancel the rest, because broadband, TV, phone and mobile are separate contracts even when billed together:

  • Broadband and Sky TV: cancelling broadband does not cancel Sky TV, and vice versa. Each needs to be cancelled on its own.
  • Sky Broadband Boost: this is a separate paid add-on. According to Sky's current guidance, Broadband Boost carries a 24-month minimum term for eligible customers, but Sky's WiFi Guarantee can allow you to cancel Boost without an early termination charge if the guarantee's conditions are met. Check the current Sky charge table or your own terms for exactly what applies to you, since this depends on your specific situation rather than a single flat rule. See Sky Broadband Boost explained if you are deciding whether to keep it.
  • Phone and mobile: these typically sit on their own separate contracts too and are not affected by a broadband cancellation.

If you are only cancelling part of a bundle, it is worth asking Sky for a written breakdown of what your remaining services will cost afterwards, since removing one product can sometimes change the pricing on what is left.

Should you take a Sky retention or renewal offer?

If Sky offers a deal to stay, weigh it against the alternatives rather than deciding on the spot. You should always compare:

  • Price across the full contract, not just the first few months.
  • Whether price rises apply during the new contract, and when.
  • Speed and expected service, matched against what your household actually needs.
  • Contract length, and whether you are comfortable being tied in again.
  • Included extras, and whether they are genuinely useful to you.
  • Exit terms, in case you need to leave the new deal early too.
  • What else is available at your address, since a retention offer is only worth comparing against real alternatives.

There is no single right answer here. A retention offer is not automatically good or automatically bad, and switching away is not automatically cheaper either; it depends on how the full package compares.

Compare broadband options before cancelling

Once you have checked your Sky contract and bundle implications, compare broadband options available at your address. If you are weighing Sky against another specific provider you are also considering leaving, our guides to cancel TalkTalk broadbandcancel Vodafone broadband and cancel BT broadband cover those processes too.

Availability, installation timing and your current contract dates can all affect how smooth a switch is, so it is worth checking your options before you commit to a decision either way.

Frequently asked questions

Can I cancel Sky broadband online?

Not entirely as a self-service form. Sky's help pages and web chat are the current route to start a cancellation; check Sky's help pages directly for the current options, since these can change.

Can I cancel Sky broadband but keep Sky TV?

Yes. Broadband and TV are separate Sky contracts, so cancelling one does not end the other.

Can I cancel Sky TV but keep broadband?

Yes, for the same reason: the two run on separate contracts and separate notice periods.

What happens to my Sky email or account services?

This depends on your specific account and services, and should be checked directly with Sky before you cancel, since Sky email and account access can be tied to conditions that are not the same for every customer.

Do I need to return my router?

Generally, yes, if it is Sky's equipment rather than yours. Follow the current Sky return instructions for your specific equipment, since deadlines and methods are set out directly by Sky rather than following one fixed rule.

Can I keep my landline number?

This depends on your new provider and setup; check with them directly when you switch, since number porting is not guaranteed in every scenario.
